E ai ki a Kawiti, tō tātou rangatira o neherā:

"Waiho kia kakati te namu i te whārangi o te pukapuka, ko reira ka tahuri atu ai."

According to Kawiti, an esteemed rangatira of former times:

"Let the sandfly bite the page of the book and then turn to act."

A reminder that wisdom comes through careful observation, reflection, and thoughtful action.

Te Tiriti based solutions to inequities in mental health and addictions

This whakatauki speaks to the many hidden things within the deep. The intent of the conference is to highlight mental health and addiction issues faced within the North and to identify innovative solutions through a Treaty-based relationship. This proverb was the foundational reference to our conference branding and design

  • The conference brand ensures a visual narrative, that reflects a Māori thought.
  • A local Māori artist, BJ Natanahira provided the Māori pattern for the green trim and accent parts of the composition. The patterns have been simplified from traditional carved designs and are from the North.
  • The waka heads towards circle (symbolizing the use of the sun,  in the navigation to Aotearoa by the early Polynesian settlers)
  • The light blend in the blue is in reference to 'mai te po ki te ao marama' - Coming out of the dark and into the light as per the intent of the conference
